Rhinoplasty in Rochester, NY

What Is A Rhinoplasty?

At The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, rhinoplasty surgery is used to alter the size and shape of a patient’s nose. Our surgeons in Rochester can perform nose surgery to:

  • Reduce or increase the size of your nose
  • Alter the shape of the bridge or the tip
  • Reduce the width of your nostrils
  • Correct the way your nose is positioned

Rhinoplasty can also be used to correct a birth defect or injury to the nose, and to help relieve nose-related problems with breathing.

Rhinoplasty Candidates

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty should be at least 13 years old. It is important that the patient has finished their facial growth before going forward with nose surgery. Patients that are considering rhinoplasty should be in overall good health and should not be smokers. It is important for patients to have realistic expectations of the outcome.

Nose Surgery Procedure

At the Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, your nose surgery may take between one to two hours depending on your goals. In some cases, more complicated operations may take more time.

First, the skin is separated from the cartilage and bone that make up the structure of the nose. After making the incisions, your surgeon sculpts the underlying structure of your nose into the desired shape. The type of sculpting performed will depend on the decisions you and your surgeon have made concerning what your new nose should look like.

At the end of the rhinoplasty procedure, your plastic surgeon pulls the skin back down over the newly-sculpted nose structure. All incisions are sealed with stitches. Dressings and splints will usually be off by the end of the first week after the rhinoplasty surgery.

Types Of Rhinoplasty

Your plastic surgeon at the Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester may perform rhinoplasty from inside the nose, or from outside the nose. From inside the nose, the incisions are located inside the nostrils. Your plastic surgeon may, on the other hand, prefer to perform rhinoplasty as an “open” procedure. “Open” rhinoplasty is common in more complicated cases.

See What Our Patients Are Saying...

“Thank you so much for letting me feel so beautiful. I am already so happy with the results of my rhinoplasty. I can’t imagine a more perfect nose and I’ve never been able to say that before!” - Nicole T.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Recovery

After rhinoplasty surgery, we will place a splint on your nose to help keep it stable for the next 7 to 10 days. Your surgeon will prescribe you pain killers for any pain you may experience and may use a cold compress to reduce any swelling. It is important to keep your head elevated while sleeping on your back to reduce pressure on your nose. You will see bruising around your eyes that may last about two weeks.

Do not blow your nose for the first week post-op as this may increase your risk of bleeding. You may see blood in the mucus that will drain from your nose for the first few days following surgery. This is normal and may be cleaned by changing your gauze pad. You should be changing your gauze pad 10-20 times a day for the first 48 hours.

Rhinoplasty Results

Patients with realistic expectations and goals are generally very happy with the results of their rhinoplasty. The results depends on your nasal bone and cartilage structure, the shape of your face, your age, and the thickness of your skin. You will look and feel fine within a week or two, but you may have minimal swelling for as long as a year after the procedure. Results may not be optimal until a year, but patients are usually extremely happy with results right after the nose surgery.

Risks Of Nose Surgery

There are risks involved with any surgical procedure. With nose surgery, these include excessive bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia, and localized pain, discoloration or numbness. Occasionally, a patient may be unhappy with the surgery results. If desired, the patient can get a revision rhinoplasty. For most patients, the rhinoplasty procedure is uncomplicated and yields pleasing results.
