Non-Surgical Treatments

At the Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, we offer many non-surgical treatments that can help you look great without undergoing surgery and the corresponding recovery time. While most of these options aren’t as enduring as a procedure such as a surgical facelift, they can help push back the hands of time just the same.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

As their name implies, dermal fillers fill wrinkles and areas of volume loss. They are injected beneath the wrinkle and add volume, pushing the skin back upward. Fillers work on what are known as “static wrinkles.” These are the type of wrinkles that are on display all the time — think of a wrinkle in a shirt. Static wrinkles form because of the collagen loss that comes with natural aging, sun damage, other environmental factors, and personal habits such as smoking. Dermal fillers are categorized as “natural” or “synthetic.” Natural fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane® are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that is responsible for hydrating, plumping, and firming the skin. Synthetic fillers such as Radiesse® contain synthetic substances, such as calcium microspheres to provide a structural framework under the skin and to sometimes prompt new collagen production.

What Is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion uses a rapidly rotating diamond wheel or wire brush to remove the upper layers of the facial skin. The skin that grows back to replace the removed tissue is smoother and younger looking. Dermabrasion can decrease the appearance of fine facial lines (particularly around the mouth) and improve the look of acne scars. After your dermabrasion procedure, there is some downtime as your skin heals. In most cases, your new skin grows back in 5-8 days, but it will remain very sensitive to the sun for up to a year.

What Laser Services Do You Offer?

We offer laser skin tighteninglaser hair removal, and laser removal of sunspots. We’ve employed CO2, ndYAG, and yellow light lasers in our practice for over 20 years. We have included the Gentle Max Laser for skin tightening.

What Are Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are made from the botulinum toxin type A. These are the bacteria that cause botulism, but long ago scientists discovered that when injected in minute doses, this toxin could temporarily paralyze a muscle. Some wrinkles on the upper third of the face — crow’s feet, the 11s, and forehead lines — are created when we form expressions such as frowning or squinting. The muscle contracts under the skin and a wrinkle forms above it. By temporarily stopping the muscle from contracting, neuromodulators stop the wrinkle from forming on the surface. BOTOX® is the most famous neuromodulator, but Dysport® and Xeomin® are other brands we offer.

What Are The Benefits Of Your Non-Surgical Treatments?

Obviously, non-surgical treatments don’t involve surgery and the recovery that follows. These procedures are far less expensive, as well. However, the results from non-surgical treatments are neither as dramatic, nor enduring as surgical procedures. The exception to this would be laser hair removal, which doesn't have surgical options. With procedures such as laser skin tightening, the laser energy triggers new collagen production in the dermis layer of the skin. This production increase can last for up to a year. Fillers and neuromodulators provide results that last for from four months to over a year, but after your body eventually absorbs the now-inert substance, it will be time to schedule another session to maintain your results. On the nose, dermal fillers can be used to, in essence, “demo” nose surgery. With fillers, we can add volume or shape to your nose without committing permanently to surgery. Then, if you like the results, you can opt to have rhinoplasty or continue with fillers.

Can I Combine Some Of These Non-Surgical Options With A Surgical Procedure?

Procedures such as facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid surgery are complemented very well with the addition of dermal fillers. Fillers can help smooth certain areas and add volume to others. Laser skin tightening can also provide additional skin tightening after surgery.
