Brazilian Butt Lift in Rochester, NY

Curves are the defining aspect of a woman’s body. For a time, models and fashion magazines downplayed those curves, opting for emaciated, unhealthy looks. No longer. Today curves are in. Unfortunately, if your backside is flatter than you’d like it’s not as if you can change it with exercise. You can add volume to your buttocks by gaining weight, but that’s no way to go about it.

Instead, if you’d like to have a rounder, curvier bottom, our surgeons at Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester can perform a Brazilian butt lift. A Brazilian butt lift is basically a fat transfer to augment the buttocks. A Brazilian butt lift can transform a flat, shapeless backside into a rounder, shapelier one.

What Is A Brazilian Butt Lift?

Today, everyone celebrates the natural curves that make a woman a woman. That includes having a rounder butt. That’s the goal of a Brazilian butt lift. In these procedures, fat is harvested through liposuction from an unwanted area such as the lower abdomen or outer thighs. It is purified to remove everything but the autologous fat cells. These fat cells are then injected back into the buttocks. At Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, we pay particular attention to the upper buttocks with these injections, as that area has usually flattened somewhat as the patient has aged.

Before this fat transfer process was developed and refined, the only way to add volume to your buttocks was through butt implants using solid silicone implants. We have never performed these surgeries, as we have felt there were too many risks and potential complications, such as the implants shifting position. With a Brazilian butt lift, now we can take the patient’s own fat and use it to round out her bottom.

What Are The Benefits Of A Brazilian Butt Lift Compared To Butt Implants?

As mentioned above, we’ve never performed butt implant procedures at Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester. This is because butt implants have a high failure rate. The silicone implants can shift and move position, creating asymmetry, and other issues.

In contrast, a Brazilian butt lift simply takes the patient’s own fat and removes it from one area where they don’t want it, such as the flanks or the abdomen, and then injects it back into the buttocks to add volume and create shape. This isn’t a foreign object being placed; it is simply the patient’s own fat. That makes rejection virtually impossible, and the results are natural.

Brazilian butt lifts have the dual benefit of combining liposuction with augmentation.

Who Is A Good Candidate For A Brazilian Butt Lift?

Whether your buttocks have flattened with age, or whether you’ve never liked the shape of them, this could be a good procedure for you. By transferring fat from an unwanted location to your bottom, you can add shape and volume. The goal is to enhance your natural curves. It can add volume and projection to a flat or small butt. A butt lift can add size, giving the patient a more prominent butt. Really the only requirement for these procedures is that the patient has enough unwanted fat that can be harvested to use for the transfer. How you seek to change your contour is up to you and we’ll work to make sure we deliver just the look you’re seeking.

How Is A Brazilian Butt Lift Done?

The Brazilian butt lift is a two-step procedure performed with the patient under general anesthesia. It takes from two to four hours. To harvest the fat, we perform tumescent liposuction. This helps to contour areas surrounding the buttocks. This is done through a closed system to keep the fat pure and clear from possible contamination. The harvested fat is then purified to separate the fat cells from other cells, blood, and the tumescent solution.

The second step involves re-injecting the fat into the buttocks. This involves dozens of tiny injections at varying depths. This ensures an even, natural-looking augmentation. As mentioned briefly above, special attention is given to the upper buttocks because this presents a lifted, younger-looking profile.

From Where Is The Fat Removed?

The first phase of a Brazilian butt lift is to harvest the unwanted fat. You’ll decide where you want us to take the fat. The most popular areas for harvesting the fat needed for re-injection are the lower back, waist, flanks (love handles), thighs, and lower abdomen.

How Much Fat Is Removed?

There isn’t a “set” amount of fat to be removed. During your consultation, you’ll discuss how much volume you’d like to add to your buttocks. How much larger do you want your buttocks to be? Is the goal to simply add shape or to increase overall size? Your goals will dictate how much fat is needed. Your surgeon will harvest more fat than will be re-injected. That ensures the highest quality fat cells with the best chances of permanently “taking.” For a rough estimate, 1000 ccs of fat are usually the minimum amount that needs to be harvested.

What Results Can A Brazilian Butt Lift Achieve?

A rounder bottom. A curvier figure. Filling out your jeans or swimsuit bottom. If you’ve never liked the lack of shape on your backside, a Brazilian butt lift can change that. The goal is to add shape and dimension to your buttocks. During your consultation with your Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester surgeon, you’ll discuss the aspects of your butt that you don’t like and the changes you’d like to see. Then we focus on creating the bottom you’ve wanted.

Plus, there’s nothing artificial being placed in your body. Remember, it’s your own fat that is used to augment your buttocks. By removing unwanted fat from one location and moving it where you’d like added volume, it’s a win-win for your figure.

What Is Recovery Like After A Brazilian Butt Lift?

The most important aspect of your recovery from this surgery is to let your relocated fat settle in undisturbed. To successfully “take” your transferred fat cells need to acquire a blood supply. They can do so more effectively if they are not jostled and placed under pressure. What does that mean? You’ll need to avoid sitting or lying on your buttocks for a minimum of three weeks. You need to avoid direct pressure. This isn’t a painful recovery, but the restrictions on sitting can be somewhat of a burden. Patients can usually return to work after two weeks, with normal activities basically OK after a month.

What Are The Risks Involved With A Brazilian Butt Lift?

If you’ve been researching a Brazilian butt lift, you’ve probably heard of horror stories, even some deaths associated with these procedures. That’s what happens when a procedure becomes the “in” thing — doctors without the proper training or ethics start offering the procedure. This can lead to serious complications. Each of our plastic surgeons at Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has extensive training, and follows a strict code of ethics. That’s the kind of expertise you can trust for this procedure.

There are the same risks involved with this procedure as with any surgery: infection, reaction to anesthesia, excessive bleeding, fluid accumulation, and the like.

Specific to this procedure are these risks:

  • Numbness or changes in skin sensation
  • Fat necrosis
  • Asymmetry between buttocks
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Skin discoloration
  • Prolonged swelling
  • Enduring pain
  • Need for revision procedure

How Do I Sit after Having a Brazilian Butt Lift?

For your Brazilian Butt Lift to achieve the best possible results, it's imperative that you protect the newly transferred fat cells. It can take a few weeks for these cells to establish the blood supply that is needed for them to survive. Your post-op instructions are designed to enable the best integration of the inserted fat cells, which means you'll need to avoid putting pressure on the area for some time. This looks like lying on your stomach a lot.

For two to four weeks after BBL, you'll need to avoid lying on your back, sitting normally, and doing anything that will put pressure on the buttocks. After visiting with your plastic surgeon following your surgery, you'll receive gradual clearance to resume normal activities, including sitting. Initially, this will look like sitting on a special donut-shaped pillow. You may decrease the use of this pillow or completely eliminate its use approximately six weeks after your body-shaping procedure.

Are there Scars from BBL Surgery?

You will have some scarring after your Brazilian Butt Lift, yes. These will be located in the buttocks as well as whatever area or areas from which your doctor has harvested fat. The scars that result from the BBL procedure are very small. Your doctor doesn't make incisions for any part of this procedure, only tiny nicks in the skin to accommodate the narrow cannula used for liposuction. These usually measure no more than about one centimeter long. Even small scars can take about one year to fully mature. After that time, you may not even notice them.

How Long do the Results of Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery Last?

It's normal for some of the fat that is injected into the buttocks to be absorbed. The cells that establish blood supply are expected to remain in their new area indefinitely. That said, your fat cells may change over time. This is especially likely if you experience changes in your weight. The results of your BBL procedure should last many years and can last permanently with minor age-related changes in shape. You can support your long-term results by maintaining your weight with healthy lifestyle choices.

Can I Combine My Butt Lift with Another Procedure?

As it stands, the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure involves two surgical techniques. It also sculpts at least two areas of the body, the one from which fat is harvested and the buttocks. Your doctor will help you determine the best place or places to extract excess fat to achieve the best results. Harvesting from an adjacent area such as the thighs and hips can enhance the accentuation of the buttocks. Due to the amount of fat that's needed, it's not uncommon to perform the liposuction procedure on the abdomen. More dramatic improvement may be needed in some cases. Specifically, some patients may benefit from combining their BBL with a body lift. If the buttocks are droopy due to sagging skin or as a result of weight loss, the lift can ensure that the buttocks area doesn't just appear fuller but also truly lifted.
