Rhinoplasty or a nose-reshaping procedure at The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester usually takes an hour or two, depending on the cosmetic goals and the degree of skin elasticity in the nasal area.
If you’re about to undergo the procedure and wonder what your recovery will be like the first day after the procedure, read on. It is important to note, though, that not everyone heals at the same rate; this is a general picture of what to expect.
First, a tiny lightweight splint will be placed on your nose to help keep it stable for the next seven to 10 days. Mild to moderate pain will be present, but can be handled with prescription painkillers. You may be nauseous during the first 24 hours from your anesthesia.
The greatest challenge for the first week post-surgery is to not blow your nose. This reduces your risk of bleeding. You can try to sniff backwards if necessary. You may notice specks of blood mixed with the mucus that will drain for the first two days following surgery. This is normal and frequently changing your gauze pad is necessary. You can expect to change it 10 to 20 times-a-day within the first 48 hours.
Bruising and swelling following surgery can be greatly reduced with cold compresses. It’s also important to keep your head elevated and to sleep on your back to avoid unnecessary pressure on your nose.
