How to Prepare for Laser
- Posted on: Nov 30 2017
It used to be that patients would run and scream at the thought of a laser while imagining images of Dr. Evil himself zapping the world to pieces with the single use of a laser. Fortunately, the only havoc Dr. Evil can wreak upon us is the mere fact that Mike Myers is practically in retirement.
Lasers are one of the most popular procedures that we offer our patients here at The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester. By using a variety of lasers including Nd YAG, CO2, and yellow light lasers, our board-certified physician assistant, Julie Sylvester, can perform a variety of laser procedures including vein treatments, skin tightening, and even laser hair removal.
Depending on the laser procedure we are performing, we will give you some detailed instructions on how to properly prepare, but here are some basic suggestions.
Avoid the Sun
Even though you may be craving a little bit of Vitamin D during this time of year, the last thing you should do before any laser treatment gets too much sun. Sunburns or too much sun exposure can make your skin especially sensitive which may make it more prone to burning or other skin problems after laser. Depending on the area being targeted, we may recommend that you apply a thin layer of sunscreen.
Avoid Waxing or Plucking
If you are getting laser hair removal, make sure that you avoid waxing or plucking the affected skin area because this will interfere with the hair follicle and how well the laser will be able to target it. We do encourage patients to shave beforehand and to also apply some sunscreen.
During your initial consultation, we will help determine what laser treatment, if any, is right for you. To help ensure that your treatment goes as smoothly as possible, use the tips listed above. Schedule your laser consultation appointment today at our Rochester office!
