How to Get Rid of Scarring

Scar Removal Rochester NYHaving a scar from falling off the monkey bars when you were in 1st grade may have been cool then but now it’s more of an eyesore. If you have a scar that makes you feel self-conscious or that is even painful, then we can help remove it. Depending on the type of scar, the location, and the size, we will determine what type of treatment will be most effective for you. Let’s take a closer look.

Types of Scars

As previously mentioned, before we determine what type of treatment will give you the best results, we will have to determine what type of scar you have which is easy with a simple consultation. There are three main types of scars which include keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, and contractures.

Types of Treatment

Once we have identified the type of scar you have, then we will discuss your treatment options. Here at The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, we offer three different types of scar removal treatments.

Steroid Injections

The most basic type of scar revision treatment that we offer is steroid injections. So, how do steroid injections work exactly? When injected into your skin, steroids boost your body’s natural healing processes which help to heal keloid and hypertrophic scars.

Z-Plasty

Z-plasty is a minor surgery that is used to realign the scar so that it is more in line with the skin’s natural creases— which makes it less visible. In addition to helping with the appearance of a scar, Z-plasty can also help ease some of the tension from contracture scars.

Skin Grafting and Flap Surgery

Both of these procedures are performed under general anesthesia as an inpatient procedure in a hospital. Typically, skin grafting and flap surgery are used for more severe or large scars and are very useful in improving the function of the scarred area.
