Body-contouring cosmetic surgeries are one of the most sought after procedures we have here at our Rochester plastic surgery practice. Every so often, men and women who have tried both diet and exercise to improve the appearance of their abdominal area and haven’t achieved the results they want are the ones who show keen interest in body contouring procedures such as as liposuction and a tummy tuck.
During the initial consultation, it’s not uncommon for one to ask which procedure suits them best. Should they choose liposuction? Or go for a tummy tuck? Can they do both?
When Liposuction is Ideal
If you are generally within your ideal weight but is bothered with the appearance of localized pockets of abdominal fat that doesn’t seem to respond to diet and exercise, a liposuction should be in order. In addition, you will most likely achieve the best possible outcomes if you have excellent skin elasticity.
When a Tummy Tuck is Ideal
If your main concerns has to do with sagging abdominal skin resulting from massive weight loss or a recent childbirth, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty will be the procedure of choice. It can either be done alone or in conjunction with liposuction if excess pockets of abdominal fat are present alongside excess sagging skin.
Here at our practice, both procedures often complement each other. For patients who choose to only have one of the two procedures done but have concerns that both liposuction and tummy tuck can improve on, we often recommend the least invasive procedure first (that is liposuction) and decide on a tummy tuck if you want to further improve and refine the appearance of their abdominal contours.
